Northwest Authors Series: Marianne Monson

Marianne Monson will be joining us for the next event in the Northwest Authors Series on Saturday, March 9th, at 2:00pm.

“Women of the Blue and Gray:  True Civil War Stories of Mothers, Medics, Soldiers, and Spies” is a collection of short biographies and sketches of the women who have populated the background and footnotes of  American Civil War history.  These women, of diverse social status and race, made contributions during the Civil War as field medics, doctors, slaves, disguised soldiers, and, of course, mothers and wives.  Monson carefully researched each of these women and brought fresh relevance to their stories of endurance and hardship during a difficult period in our nation’s history.

Monson adds this collection of historical accounts to her other non-fiction compilation, “Frontier Grit:  The Unlikely True Stories of Daring Pioneer Women,” which focused on the women who arrived from Europe to settle in the American West.  She has also written three novels in the Mima Journals series, the inspirational adventures of a pioneer woman coming to America from England as a teenager and her subsequent coming of age.  The series is based on Monson’s own pioneer ancestors who settled in America from Yorkshire, England.  Monson decided to write their story as fiction so that she could explore the theme of a family following different paths to religious freedom.

Monson teaches at Clatsop Community College and founded the Writer’s Guild in Astoria.

This is a free event and open to all to attend.
