Free Resources

The NW Early Learning Hub of Clatsop County is a partner of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, offering free books to children under 5. See if you qualify.

The CDC offers wonderful free books for early readers, which include Amazing Me (3-4 years old), Where is Bear (1-2 years old), and Baby’s Busy Day (board book). Each book focuses on development and offers tips for caregivers.

Outreach

Libraries ROCC
Libraries Reading Outreach in Clatsop County (Libraries ROCC) is a library services outreach program that partners between the communities, three public libraries, corporate sponsors, and five school districts. Together, through collaboration and community support, they seek to bridge the gaps between funded and unfunded youth services in rural areas. Their goal is to place a library card in the hands of every child who wants one, to provide courier services between the schools and libraries for library materials, and to support the annual countywide summer reading program.

Assistance League of the Columbia Pacific is an all volunteer, nonprofit organization that is focused on transforming lives, strengthening the community and giving children in need hope and inspiration for a brighter tomorrow.

A quick guide to choosing books for young readers:

Board Books (0-3 Years Old)
Children aged 3 or younger. Quick and easy to read, these are made of mostly pictures, and few words. The main goal of these books is to teach young children basic language skills like memorizing their ABCs, identifying shapes & colors, etc.

Picture books
Children aged 2 to 8. They primarily use illustrations to tell the story and often share life lessons related to emotional intelligence (empathy, forgiveness, kindness), relationships, social connections, and morals.

Chapter books
Children aged 7 to 9. These books have more content and more complex language than the children may have seen before. Therefore, they are broken into chapters to help the readers better comprehend the material.

Easy/Emerging Reader
Children aged 5 to 9. The books have characters, settings, and themes relevant to this age group. The books include short, uncomplicated story lines that are told with words and illustrations, but the illustrations are secondary and not necessary for understanding the story.

Juvenile books
Children aged 7-18. Juvenile books can be fiction or nonfiction. These books speak to the emotions and intellect of the reader. They are written on subjects that are very relevant to the reader’s life and that capture the attention of children a little older and younger than the target age.

Middle grade
Children aged 8-12. The age of reader is connected to the age of the main character. Plot lines center on conflict resolution and may include themes like sibling rivalry, fitting in with friends, and new attractions.

Young Adult books
Readers aged 12-18 and 16-25. These books can be nonfiction or fiction, educational and entertaining, and they must hold the attention of the target age group and speak to them emotionally and intellectually by being very relevant to their lives. YA books can be written in any genre (historical, crime, romance, etc.).

Closed Captioning
Closed captioning provides a transcript for the audio track of a video presentation that is synchronized with the video and audio tracks. Captions are generally visually displayed over the video, which benefits people who are deaf and hard of hearing, and anyone who cannot hear the audio due to noisy environments. Most of our website’s video content includes automated captions. Learn how to turn captioning on and off in YouTube.

Volume Controls
Your computer, tablet, or mobile device has volume control features. Each video and audio service has its own additional volume controls. Try adjusting both your device’s volume controls and your media players’ volume controls to optimize your listening experience.
