The book that will be discussed at the August 21 meeting of Cannon Beach Reads is A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, by James Joyce. Published in 1916 after appearing in serialized form in The Egoist, this was Joyce’s first novel. The novel, a fictionalized retelling of Joyce’s own youth, examines the story of Stephen Dedalus, a young Irishman who struggles with, and ultimately rejects, Catholicism and Irish nationalism as he develops his identity as a writer. Joyce’s modernist writing style can be challenging but worth exploring, and this novel has been described as a “challenging, exciting, humorous, and moving story.”
Arthur Broten will be leading the discussion on Wednesday, August 21 at the Library. Cannon Beach Reads meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. New members are always welcome. Coffee and delicious refreshments are provided.
