Join us Wednesday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. at the Cannon Beach Library for the World of Haystack Rock Library Lecture Series. These are recurring lectures with different speakers and topics that are held on the second Wednesday of every month, from November to May. Roy Lowe will present, “Monitoring Migratory Birds in Lincoln County, Oregon Through Citizen Science”
Roy Lowe and other local volunteers have been documenting the return of the threatened Western Snowy Plover to Lincoln County beaches. Absent as a breeding species in the county for nearly four decades, successful recovery efforts have greatly increased the Oregon coast population of this unique shorebird species. Volunteers are also monitoring the Pacific Black Brant at Yaquina Bay, whose wintering population has been in decline since the 1980’s. Black Brant are dependent on eel grass as their primary forage in wintering and staging areas.
Waldport resident Roy Lowe was employed with the US Fish and Wildlife Service for more than 37 years. He was stationed at the Hatfield Marine Science Center for 30 years and was the Refuge Manager of the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex upon his retirement in 2015.
Friends of Haystack Rock is a nonprofit organization focused on keeping Haystack Rock healthy and thriving. Their mission is to promote the preservation and protection of the intertidal life and birds that inhabit the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. They do this in cooperation with Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) and other partnerships.
