Join us Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the Cannon Beach Library for the World of Haystack Rock Library Lecture Series. These are recurring lectures with different speakers and topics that are held on the second Wednesday of every month, from November to May. Allison Anholt, the Coastal Community Science Biologist for Portland Audubon, will present “Snowy Plover Monitoring on the Northern Oregon Coast: A Community Science Perspective.”
Allison will cover the current status of Western Snowy Plovers on the Oregon Coast. She’ll explain why they are at risk and discuss the current and future efforts to monitor and protect these birds as they recolonize their historic range on Oregon’s North Coast.
Allison manages community science monitoring projects for coastal birds on Oregon’s North Coast, including Western Snowy Plovers, Black Oystercatchers, and local seabirds. Before coming to Portland Audubon, she worked at the intersection of coastal wildlife conservation and community science in the Aleutian Islands, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Florida Everglades, and Cape May. She holds an M.S. in Ecology and Evolution from Rutgers University, a B.S. in Law and Policy from The College of New Jersey, and is currently finishing her Ph.D. working with First Nations fisheries on issues of seabird bycatch in Arctic Canada.
Friends of Haystack Rock is a nonprofit organization focused on keeping Haystack Rock healthy and thriving. Their mission is to promote the preservation and protection of the intertidal life and birds that inhabit the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. They do this in cooperation with Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) and other partnerships.
