4th Annual Writers Read Celebration

4th Annual Writers Read Celebration
Join us for a casual evening as we celebrate two things we love the most at the library – writing and reading! Download a Writers Read Printable Program here.

The library’s NW Authors Series will host the Fourth Annual Writers Read Celebration Saturday, March 5th at 7 p.m. on Facebook Live. Writers from across the region will read original works interpreting the theme, “Recovery?”

A five-member panel selected 16 pieces from 45 entries without knowing who wrote them. The pieces include poems, essays, a rap, and a “shuffle” poem, where individual lines are written and shuffled to create different poems.

The writers range from Camas, Washington to Wheeler, Oregon and include several from Clatsop and Tillamook counties. The writers who will read their works are:

  • Adria Bagadnani, Manzanita: poem, “Bird”
  • John Ciminello, Naselle, Washington: poems, “The Douser,” “Back to the Beginning”
  • Bill Graffius, Gearhart: poems, “The Cyborg Gardener,” “Deciding Factor”
  • Karen Keltz, Tillamook: poems, “Another Kind of Resilience,” “Realm of Possibility”
  • Phyllis Mannan, Manzanita: story, “Holes” and poem, “Poem with a Line from Lao
  • Tzu”
  • Steven Mayer, Cannon Beach: essay, “On Recovery”
  • Kristen Nekovar, Astoria: rap poem, “Pill Bug”
  • Jennifer Nightingale, Astoria: poem, “Everything Changed”
  • Emily Ransdell, Camas, Washington: poems, “Consider the Blackberry,” “Our Pandemic Year”
  • Scott T. Starbuck, Battle Ground, Washington: poem, “Slim’s Tree”
  • L Swartz, Wheeler: shuffle poem, “Hunger, edges, falling”

This is the fourth year the Cannon Beach Library has hosted the Writers Read Celebration, which has quickly become a favorite event in the community. Every November through January, we ask writers to submit entries on different themes; the pieces are to be no longer than 600 words. Thank you to all the talented writers who shared their works with us this year. Writers interpreted the theme “Recovery?” in deeply personal and diverse ways. Submissions included poetry of all styles, essays, and short stories. We hope you will join us to hear authors read their selected works, as we celebrate writing, reading, and recovery.
